Where we started

The Daltons Business website was launched in 2001 as an online channel for the Daltons Weekly newspaper which was published from 1867 until 2011.

Daltons Weekly was the UK’s leading weekly classified newspaper for Businesses, Property and Holidays for sale.

Established during the late 1860s by Herbert Dalton, Daltons Weekly was initially a single broadsheet listing ‘Accommodation for Gentleman’ in the then fashionable middle class suburbs around Vauxhall in South London. The paper proved very successful, but within two years of starting the paper, Dalton died, leaving it to his brother, who was a butcher and had no interest in publishing. The brother sold the paper to two brothers by the name of ‘Hebert’, for £100. For the next 102 years, Daltons Weekly remained a family business owned by the Heberts.

Over this period the paper grew and began to cover additional market sectors. In June 1972, the paper was purchased by Morgan Grampian Ltd who focused on the three main market areas of Holidays, Property and Businesses and closed down unrelated sectors. In 1987 Morgan Grampian was acquired by United News and Media, currently known as United Business Media Plc.

As user traffic to Daltonsbusiness.com increased dramatically during 2008 it was clear where the future lay, and Daltons accelerated its digital transition strategy. This included a significant ongoing investment to develop the website and offer a more comprehensive digital offering to connect buyer and sellers of businesses.

By 2011 UK business buyers and Daltons Weekly readers had migrated to a preferred online search. In July 2011, the final print edition of Daltons Weekly rolled off the presses. The time was right to become a 100% digital business.

In 2012, the Daltons brand and websites were owned and operated by digital media specialists, Innovare Media Ltd.

In 2014 Innovare Media withdrew the Daltons brand from the Holidays and residential property sectors, closing those respective Daltons websites, to focus and specialise specifically on the businesses for sale market, committing to continue to develop daltonsbusiness.com.

The Daltons Business brand was acquired by Metropolis in 2016 and widely recognised as being the definitive online resource for buyers and sellers of businesses.
