Flexible Working Preferred

Both small-to-medium sized businesses and working parents prefer flexible working agreements to the extension of maternity leave suggested by Government.

New results from Citrix Online have revealed that 46% of fathers and 44% of mothers believe that an extension in maternity and paternity leave would have a negative impact on their career, and that flexible working and work-from-home alternatives are more important to them than a pension.

54% of mums felt that the ability to work away from the office was the top benefit that mums would like in their job, while only 44% put a pension as their number one priority.

74% of SMEs interviewed in the survey have already introduced flexible working options in the workplace, with only 13% saying that they felt that the quality of an employee’s work might suffer as a result of remote working.

On the prospect of an extension to parental leave, 58% felt that longer maternity leave would have a negative commercial impact on their business, while 48% felt that longer paternity leave would have the same effect.

Bernardo de Albergaria, vice president at Citrix Online, believes that web-commuting alternatives are fast becoming the preferred solution for both employers and employees. “Companies can minimise disruption to their business while allowing parents to achieve a rewarding home live as well as momentum in their career,” he said.
