Café premises need to meet certain standards and zoning restrictions in order to trade legally. A café can only be run from a property with an A3 use class (the A3 use class covers restaurants and cafes). Planning permission is rarely required if you want to trade from an A4 or A5 classed premises (drinking establishments and hot food takeaways respectively), and you will most likely need some form of ‘change of use’ permission if you are planning to trade from any other kind of property. It’s always best to make your intentions clear to the local council if in any doubt; they can clarify your obligations regarding planning, and they can also advise you on the health & safety and hygiene standards that must be met.
