LOCATION: Melksham is Wiltshire's fifth-largest town by population after Swindon, Salisbury, Chippenham and Trowbridge. Located between Bath, Trowbridge and Chippenham, it has many varied industries including Avon Rubber, which previously owned the Avon Tyre plant in the town centre. Cooper Tire & Rubber Company now operates the plant, and is still a major employer in the town. In 2000, Avon Rubber plc moved to a large purpose-built facility just 3 km (2 miles) to the south of the town near Semington, employing over 300 people. Melksham is also home to Knorr-Bremse, a designer and manufacturer of railway braking systems, at a modern purpose-built facility in Bowerhill. The town has a thriving business district and is close to the retail centres of Bath, Bristol, Chippenham, Trowbridge and Swindon and is surrounded by beautiful villages such as Lacock, Holt, Seend and Semington. Substantial funding has allowed a variety of dynamic expansion and enhancement programmes, including improvement of the town centre. To cater for the unprecedented growth and attraction in recent years, there are new schools and improved infrastructure. Melksham is well served by both traditional high street stores and smaller privately run independent stores. It has four medium-sized supermarkets: Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Lidl and Aldi, with permission for a fifth granted during 2009 by the local planning authority on a site controlled by Asda. Waitrose opened in March 2010.
BUSINESS: Long established retailer of angling and sports equipment and accessories. Supplying all the major brands for coarse, sea and game fishing together with a huge variety of baits. The shop is also the principal local supplier of Nike and Adidas sports equipment, clothing and footwear and is a registered firearms dealer.
Ideally the vendor would like to sell the business together with the whole freehold property including the self-contained one bed flat on the first floor and the large rear garden, which appears to have development possibilities. However, he is prepared to sell the business separately either for relocation or with the benefit of a short term lease of the shop.
YEARS ESTABLISHED: A business of the same type has traded from the site for c 40 years and this is the first time it has been available for more than 25 years, the current owner having acquired it in 1984.
TRADE: Turnover of £52,109 was reported for the year ended 31 January 2010. Figures for the year ended 31 January 2011 are expected to be available shortly. The vendor expects these to show a slight increase. Please note that if a business is VAT registered, all figures exclude VAT.
REASON FOR SALE: The vendor wishes to move back to Surrey to assist with the care of an elderly relative.
STAFF: The vendor operates the shop without assistance during the week but is supported by two boys on Saturdays.
