Market trends – May 21

With Freedom Day delayed to 19th July, following a rise in the ‘Delta’ variant across the UK, some businesses are having to remain closed, such as nightclubs and hospitality events. Others will need to keep in place the social distancing rules. Pubs and restaurants are running with reduced covers and having to provide table service – less customers and more staff is causing immense financial pressure.

Buyer activity remains positive

The delayed easing of restrictions has not deterred buyers. Activity on daltonsbusiness.com is showing significant increases in buyer enquiries for certain business types. Enquiries are 32% higher for Pubs for sale and almost 50% higher for Bed & Breakfasts/Guest Houses for sale, year on year. Many other types of businesses for sale are seeing plenty of buyer interest, such as Post offices, Off licences and Cafes. These traditional businesses remain relevant to the constant changing digital age and have managed to adapt along with it. Deliveroo and Uber eats have helped retain a customer base for some of these businesses – with customers more than happy to have their coconut latte or breakfast roll delivered at home whilst they work. The growth in online businesses, including many small businesses have kept the demand for post offices to remain a feature of our local high street.

Decline in enquiries for Retail Space

Unfortunately, there have been some types of businesses which have seen a reduction in buyer interest year on year, such as Fish and chip shops, Newsagents, and children’s day nurseries. The reasons vary from shortages of supply to location of businesses. These businesses had previously seen a surge in enquiries, with Children’s nurseries usually being one fastest type of businesses sold.

Retail space has seen the biggest decline in buyer enquiries. With many shops being forced to close, there is an abundance of retail space.
