Established in 1888, Thomas’s of Bovey is a thriving traditional bakers and confectioners based in the Devon town of Bovey Tracey. There are two shops: the first is adjacent to the bakery in Bovey Tracey; whilst the second (which would also be leasehold) is just 11½ miles away in the delightful Dartmoor town of Chagford. In addition, Thomas’s of Bovey has a busy wholesale arm, delivering to local shops, hotels, cafes, pubs and restaurants.
The Bovey Shop is a traditional, single fronted shop, with an eye-catching window display of the baker’s tempting cakes and pastries. Accessed by a connecting door at the back of the shop is the bakery. The Chagford shop is smaller with no bakery but it does have its own Bake-Off equipment.
The Bovey Tracey property has a three bedroom maisonette above the shop. It is not included in the sale but it is an option that can be discussed.
During the Coronavirus pandemic, the business has done particularly well and enjoyed a substantial increase in sales and profits. Thomas's of Bovey bake and produce fresh, good quality food that people like. Further shops could be opened in due course and the wholesale trade could also be substantially increased.
There are 2 full time bakers and 6 shop staff.
This is a retirement sale, with the owners being a husband and wife team who have both worked full time in the bakery. It is anticipated that the business will be of particular interest to an experienced baker. However, help and training can be given.
The business runs a night bakery 6 days a week. The shops are standard retailing hours.
Thomas's of Bovey has been in business since 1888 and it is probably one of the few retail businesses to have actually thrived during the pandemic, with substantially increased sales and profits.
