LOCATION
Hillview Bed and Breakfast is situated in an elevated location on the edge of town overlooking Portree. The Isle of Skye, or in Scots Gaelic 'Eilean A Cheo' meaning Misty Isle, is located on the north western coast of Scotland and is a world-renowned holiday destination for a great number of reasons, appealing to a wide range of visitors. Portree is the cultural hub for Skye, and the largest settlement with a population of about 2500. During the season the town’s population swells many times over with the influx of tourists etc. The name of the town comes from the Gaelic Port-an-Righ, which translates as "King's Port" and dates to a visit by King James V, plus a fleet of warships, in 1540, to persuade the island clans to support him. Portree is a bustling port and a thriving cultural centre, and was also the place where Bonnie Prince Charlie spent his last days in Scotland. Among the attractions of Portree is the award winning Aros Centre which incorporates an exhibition capturing the drama of Skye's history. The centre is also the access point for walks in Portree Forest. Portree has an abundance of interesting shops and is a must-see location for those visiting the Isle of Skye.
To the south Skye’s rugged Cuillin Mountains can be observed from Hillview. This mountain range is world renown to walkers and climbers. Visitors are also drawn to the spectacular Trotternish Ridge to the north as this wild area is dominated by astonishing rock formations such as the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock and the truly extraordinary pinnacles of the Quaraing. MacLeod’s Tables can also be seen in the west from the bed and breakfast. Fishing, water sports and genealogy are constant attractions along with breath-taking scenery, castles, distilleries and a Highland welcome.

The influence of the sea is also never far away (you are never more than 11 miles from sea) with sea fishing and a wide range of other water sports available on Skye, (including diving and kayaking). Wildlife cruises sail from various locations from which you might be able to spot seals, lovable otters, great golden eagles or even rare and mighty sea eagle. Portree’s active port is set around a natural harbour framed by high cliffs, is a centre of activity used by fishing boats and cruise ships, as well as pleasure craft. Portree benefits from excellent leisure facilities including a swimming pool, pony-trekking and boat cruises plus plenty of shopping opportunities in addition to the great variety of cafes and restaurants, all of which are within walking distance for the fit and adventurous. There is primary and secondary schooling within the town.
