Advice on buying a Cornwall cafe

In Cornwall, a café can often – in culinary terms – deliver a much more refined experience than what’s associated with traditional cafés anywhere else in England. Sometimes serving fresh seafood at lunch or tapas in the evenings, a typical Cornish cafe will offer a cornucopia of luxurious local produce, such as crab sandwiches, pasties, chutney, Cornish cream tea or lobster and chips.

To give yourself the best possible chance of success, you need to have an expert understanding of the business you intend to buy. Take a close look at the audited accounts, and if possible, try to get a sense of the quarterly or monthly earnings pattern (the current café owner might ask you to sign an NDA, or Non-Disclosure Agreement, before revealing sensitive commercial information). There will likely be a huge shift in takings depending on the time of year; with careful planning, can you pre-empt any potential cash flow issues before you set out on your first year’s trading? 

Ask the seller about their relationships with suppliers. Who supplies the cafe’s food and drinks, and why? Is there an opportunity to save some money by switching suppliers when you buy the business? 

Make sure you make your own assessment about the number of covers in the cafe. Does the place feel like the kind of venue you would visit yourself? Could you squeeze in more covers without making the space less inviting? 

After you’ve made your business decisions, remember to focus on quality – Cornwall’s exemplary culinary reputation can be a double-edged sword for new business purchasers. Many tourists flock to the area to experience high-quality food, but as a result standards are high; many cafes are chef-owned, so to succeed in this area you need to be able to compete with the very best that Britain has to offer.
