What to prepare for when buying a restaurant in the UK

Restaurants are a popular choice with those looking to buy a UK business. When buying a restaurant in the UK, there are a number of criteria to look out for that will affect your ability to operate your business profitably and legally.

A restaurant’s success is affected by its pricing, its food costs and its reputation over time, however a good benchmark when trying to gauge the potential of a business as a prospective buyer is to look at the covers. ‘Covers’ refers to the number of people that the restaurant can seat and feed at any one time. If the business has a high number of covers, it will have the capacity to serve a lot of people in one sitting, and you will be able to earn more money every evening.

To operate a restaurant, your premises must have the appropriate planning permission in place. In the UK, the correct ‘use class’ for a restaurant is A3 – if the premises you purchase already has A3, A4 or A5 permission, you will not need to apply for further planning permission to run your restaurant. You also need to ensure that your restaurant marketing is appropriate.

All restaurants are obliged to meet certain levels of hygiene, must label their food clearly and must follow specific safety procedures. When starting your restaurant, you’ll need to consult with with your local council and the Food Standards Agency to ensure that you are fully compliant with the law.
