Advice on buying a shop

 

Whether you’re selling confectionery, curtains or cars, there are thousands of retail businesses for sale to choose from on Daltons Business. Before you purchase a retail business, it’s important that you ask some fundamental questions about the kind of business you want to run, and then try to buy a shop that matches these ambitions. 

First off, are you sure you need a permanent high street presence? Some of the more unusual options include…

  • Online Retail: Nowadays, many online retailers operate from a spare room in their homes, gradually renting more space as and when the business merits the expansion. If you buy a home-based online retailer with a relatively small turnover, you need to think carefully about whether you have the necessary skills to take the business to the next level to justify the cost of office and warehousing space in future.
  • Pop-Up Retail: Another less traditional option is the ‘pop up shop’, where a physical premises is set up on a temporary basis to sell a short run of products, or to cover a seasonal trading period. One example of this is a Christmas gift or calendar shop, which might open its doors in the autumn, then close again once the New Year has begun.

If you do want to buy a retail business that includes physical premises, you need to consider the specific benefits of the location you’re looking at. The premises’ position on the high street (or its shop frontage) will have an impact on how many people are aware of your shop. The number of people walking past your shop (i.e. the ‘footfall’ of the premises) is another important factor in determining the level of trade that premises will command. The area itself may have a reputation for a certain kind of shopping experience, and you need to consider this as well. Is it easy to park close by? Are there a lot of upmarket boutique-type shops in the area or does the street have a grocery focus? 

High footfall and superb shop frontage isn’t always available, but it’s also not always a vital requirement when buying a shop – it depends on the kind of retail business you hope to run. Home and garden centres on the outskirts of busy towns can do well if the parking is good, and some bookshops and luxury goods shops, if they stock a unique range of goods, can do well on exclusive side streets. The advantage of buying a shop as a going concern is that the current owner has already proved that the location is suitable for the kind of retail you hope to carry out.
