Buying a Clothes Shop: What To Look Out For

Owning a clothes shop and becoming a fashion retailer is a dream for many, but it's important to understand the intricacies of this competitive and fast-moving industry before you invest.

Look closely at historical trading figures: whenever you buy a business as a going concern, you should see the trading figures for previous months and years. If the UK had a warm winter or a cold summer, this often affects clothes sales in that quarter. When looking at the books of the clothes shop you're about to buy, trading figures might look too high or too low to believe in a certain quarter, but it could be the weather. Scroll through the archives of industry news websites and see if that period's trading figures tie in with industry patterns.

Personally inspect any stock included in the sale: you need to know that the stock you're buying can be sold on at a profit. If the storeroom isn't full of goods that are on-trend and in demand, you will struggle to sell it at a good price. If you can't see a way to make a good margin on clothes that are beginning to fall out of fashion, then there's no point in including it in the sale price. As with all retail businesses, space is at a premium. It costs money to rent every square inch in your shop, so you don't want to fill valuable storage space with items you're never going to sell.

Research the local market: It's especially important to have a thorough understanding of your market before you make any changes to the clothes shop you have just bought. Make time to watch the footfall on the street outside the clothes shop at different times during the week. What is the demographic of the shoppers in the area? What other shopping bags are they carrying? How much do you think they have to spend on clothes every month, and how much of this spend do you think your clothes shop can reasonably capture?
