Buying an architects: the benefits

It takes years to qualify as an architect, and the earnings potential for the best individuals in the business is incredibly high. So why not just start up on your own? Why buy an existing architects business?

Established Cash Flow: every startup struggles with cash flow, but in a long-term services industry like architecture, it can take years before a business starts to break even. Even if you start pitching to potential clients on your first day of trading, it can take a startup architecture practice months to secure just one commission, and the same number of months again before the client owes you any money. Buying an existing architecture practice insulates you from this painful and dangerous cash drought; an established practice already has invoices out and a list of ongoing jobs, allowing you to pay your bills and focus on what you do best: design great spaces.

Strong Local Reputation: whether you're looking at becoming the best residential architect in your town or harbour ambitions to design commercial buildings across Europe, your reputation in the industry is just as important as your vision and talent. If torn between two equally beautiful and functional designs, a client will lean towards the reliable option; new businesses can struggle to compete with architects that have been trading and delivering projects for a number of decades. Buy an existing architecture business and your reputation, combined with your fresh and unique vision, makes you a valuable commodity.

Minimum Recruitment Effort: If you're looking to scale your business, you'll need more hands on deck. By buying out an existing architecture practice, you can benefit from the experience of a trusted, tested team who have been working together for a number of years. If the current owner has a specialism but wants to move towards retirement, they may relish the opportunity to work on a contract basis for another few years. This can be discussed as part of your handover negotiations. Always make sure that you fully understand your responsibilities to new members of staff by reading their employment contracts carefully. Where appropriate, it pays to meet the staff and, ideally, get testimonials from existing customers before you sign on the dotted line.
