The Marion E. Wade award goes to ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Stoke
ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Stoke, which specialises in school and education cleaning, medical care facilities and commercial premises, has scooped ServiceMaster’s most prestigious honour ahead of over 200 other businesses at the company’s 2015 national conference in Warwickshire.
The Marion E. Wade Award of Excellence is the pinnacle of achievement within the ServiceMaster network and Tony Quinn, managing director of ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Stoke, was quick to pay tribute to his staff after collecting the accolade.
He said: “This is a massive achievement for the company and is testament to the hard work of the entire team. The company has had a real focus to its work over the past year and we’ve won a number of high profile school cleaning contracts as a result. This award will give us an extra boost to achieve even more over the next year.”
Gemma Quinn, operations director for the company, commented: “I’m so proud that our team here has been recognised amongst the many businesses in the network. We pride ourselves on our quality of service in all sectors but with our growing reputation for schools and academies, our aim is to be the number one choice for school cleaning in Stoke.”
ServiceMaster’s managing director, Alan Lewin, added: “ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Stoke has displayed the highest achievement in the pursuit of excellence and professional management in the ServiceMaster tradition. Tony and his team have shown superb results and they are a real asset to the ServiceMaster franchise network.”
ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Stoke has been trading for 19 years and employs over 300 people across Staffordshire.
Winners of the Marion E. Wade award, first presented in 1985 and named after the founder of ServiceMaster, receive an engraved wooden plaque and an all-expenses paid trip to the company’s Partners Achievement Seminar in the USA the following year.
Franchisor of the Year finalist delight!
Leading franchisor ServiceMaster Ltd, who support Merry Maids, ServiceMaster Clean, Furniture Medic and TruGreen franchises are finalists in the bfa Franchisor of the Year Awards.
The prestigious awards, run by the bfa, recognise franchisors who set a leading an example to the rest, always strive for excellence in ethical management and offer the strongest franchisee support.
The British Franchise Association (bfa) commented: "From developing new systems to enterprising and innovative initiatives, the award is given to the best all-round franchisor."
Hannah Banfield, Head of marketing for ServiceMaster said: "You need to be confident that your franchisor understands the business and market in which they are in and ServiceMaster's shortlisting offers you that peace of mind. ServiceMaster has been helping people grown their own franchise businesses for more than 50 years, and we keep on innovating."
Tom Frame, ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services East Strathclyde and Glasgow
Having been made redundant after 20 years in the Electronics industry, Tom Frame found a new career with a ServiceMaster Clean franchise in the East Strathclyde and Glasgow areas.
“Following my redundancy I decided it was time for a new direction and perhaps even to strike out on my own. After a lot of research on the web and by talking to Business Gateway I concluded that franchising was the safest route when starting up alone.”
When searching for a franchise, Tom set criteria that would aim to satisfy his long term goals. These included finding a franchise that was both recession and technology proof, could grow year upon year and whilst he was on holiday.
By attending exhibitions and seminars, Tom researched the business sector that would best satisfy these goals. Having decided on the cleaning industry, Tom contacted Franchisors in this field. “This is when I discovered ServiceMaster Clean” he says. “After a meeting at ServiceMaster’s head office I established this was an opportunity worth pursuing.”
“My business first began in the East Strathclyde area in June 2003. The contracts here are mainly with small businesses. When the Glasgow area became available I was keen to expand my business to cover a broader range of clients and in November 2006 purchased the Glasgow territory. Glasgow was and is a lucrative area with bigger blue chip businesses. It was an accruement to purchase an additional territory.”
“From starting out from scratch, with a desk, phone and the yellow pages I am very happy with where I am today!”
“After eight years, I am pleased to report that my business has seen yearly growth. This has been down to my own hard work and the great support and training fromServiceMaster. The training provided at the initial training ‘Academy’ combined with the ongoing training and support has been the key to this success.”
The ‘Academy’ training is a 10 day programme and is a requirement of all new franchisees prior to training covering all aspects of running the business including staff management and discipline, health and safety, technical, marketing and sales support.
As businesses become established, ServiceMaster Contract Services franchisees are provided with the tools and training to help them manage their growth. Regular network meetings and seminars allow the sharing of ideas and best practice with fellow franchisees. Tom adds, “These are important as they make you feel part of a larger organisation whilst running your own independent business. The annual seminars keep everyone up to date on all issues affecting the cleaning industry.”
“If asked whether I think I did the right thing, I think back to my original criteria. I can tell you, especially when I am on holiday and the business is still running, that I am able to confirm the answer is yes! Being in business for yourself isn’t just about money but improving the quality of life and the flexibility it gives.”
“Would I recommend a ServiceMaster Contract Services franchise? Absolutely! I could never imagine going back to work for someone else again!”
Jayne & Paul Gethin, ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Swansea
Jayne and Paul Gethin have been franchise owners of ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Swansea since 2005.
Jayne comments. “It was the threat of redundancy that prompted my husband Paul and I to look for another source of income. Paul had been working as an engineer and I worked at Neath Port Talbot Hospital as a clerical supervisor.
“When Paul was made redundant he found alternative employment straight away but we still continued to look for a business opportunity in order to take control of our own destiny. We looked at franchising because neither of us had run a business before and were encouraged by the level of support.”
“We met with ServiceMaster Ltd, and were impressed. We made a decision to invest Paul's redundancy money to purchase the licence and that I would take the business forward on a full time basis. Paul would continue to work and help as much as he could in the business. It is totally different from what I was used to but I really enjoy the work and every day comes with a different challenge.”
“With the support from ServiceMaster, over seven years down the line we now employ 98 staff. The business is doing really well and growing from strength to strength.”
“Would I do it all again? "Yes" and I would certainly recommend a ServiceMaster franchise to anyone looking for a new business.”
Ian Glasgow, ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Tayside & Fife
Ian Glasgow has been the owner and operator of ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Tayside & Fife since July 2010, when he purchased the business from another franchisee.
Ian was self-employed for over 25 years and it was following the sale of his previous business that he decided to look for a change.
“The thought of working for someone else was alien to me,” says Ian. “I wanted to find an existing, established business that showed plenty of opportunity. I researched a number of franchise opportunities, but very few of them, if any, showed the same scope for development as a ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services franchise. Also, the royalty fees for a ServiceMaster franchise appeared to be less than a lot of others, so it really was a ‘no brainer’.”
“I received comprehensive training from the franchisor, ServiceMaster, not only preparing me thoroughly for running my own ServiceMaster Clean Contract cleaning franchise, but also for taking over an existing business.”
“I gained a lot of knowledge from very competent staff with many years’ experience. This experience is very welcome as there is always someone at the end of a phone to offer support and advice, be it from ServiceMaster’s Head Office or from a fellow franchise owner. You never have to re-invent the wheel.”
“I am now in my third year as a ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services franchise owner and whilst it can be hard work (what isn’t in this climate?), it is also very rewarding; I would definitely recommend this franchise opportunity to others.”
