Whitmuir is an award winning fully operational organic farm, shop and cafe located 16 miles south of Edinburgh, just south of the village of Lamancha, near West Linton and is easily accessible from the A701.

In 2006, the first farm shop was opened at Whitmuir, a small but well stocked offer that proved popular with locals and people further afield. The growth of the business led in 2007 to the development of a high spec cutting space for the butchery business, and in 2009, the move to a much larger purpose-built shop and café. In addition to their own businesses, Whitmuir is also home to an antique shop (Junkantics), situated in the original farm shop, an organic plant nursery (Quercus) and a gallery (Dancing Light Gallery) who all generate additional footfall to the business. Whitmuir is an open farm, with stunning walks across the 54 ha land, and includes a Fairy Walk attracting young and older visitors, both locals and Scottish visitors.
While Whitmuir continues to hold a special place in the hearts of Heather and Pete, they both also hold full time roles out with the farm, and the time has come to focus on these interests. In March 2019 the farm café was successfully leased to AtlanticOrganic, and now the shop is offered for leasing.
The farm shop is bright, open space 188 sq m situated at the front of the building housing the shop, gallery and café, with its own access directly from the customer carpark, as well as from the other businesses. The shop is comprised of two retail areas, a large entrance space currently used to merchandise fruit and vegetables and a large central retail space, plus a large back of house storage area. The butchery is located 20m away from the shop in a converted bothy and includes the cutting room with walking chillers, and office space.
The shop retails organic fruit and vegetables, organic meat and a wide range of organic food, drinks, home and beauty products. It is a condition of the lease that the shop continues to retail organic fruit, vegetable and meat, as this is the offer currently driving strong commercial results, as well as reflecting the ethos of Whitmuir, but it is acknowledged that there is further potential to diversify the offering for example into homeware, clothing, and gifts. The farm shop and butchery are currently certified as organic processors by the Soil Association who inspect annually.
Early in Whitmuir’s journey a subscription scheme, called the Farm Supporters Scheme, was introduced for the farm shop, which is still in operation and provides a solid regular income for the business. The management and income from this scheme is included in the lease.
Further to this, the shop services a wholesale account to Margiotta in central Edinburgh as well as providing a home delivery service of around 70 drops per week around Midlothian and the Scottish Borders. Whitmuir currently run a van to service these deliveries, which would be available to buy Currently, in addition to the owners, there is one full time and two part time members of staff based in the shop.
In addition to the loyal customer base, Whitmuir has over 5,000 followers on Facebook, and a score of 4.5/5 based on Facebook opinions, and is rated 4/5 on TripAdvisor, and 4.1/5 on Google reviews.
While the business has a strong and stable customer base, there is room for growth in building Whitmuir as a destination and therefore the new tenant will need to work collaboratively with the other tenants to keep developing the offer.
