Common Problem

Most gardens in the UK have concrete posts with wooden fence panels. Concrete posts are prone to leaning over time due to ground movement and in some cases can develop cracks due to frost damage which in turn allows the panels to rattle and, in some cases, blow out in high winds. Look around and you will see there are literally thousands of homes and commercial premises that are suffering the same problem. Every property owner wants the peace of mind of knowing that their boundaries are strong and secure and will stay that way.

The Professional Solution

At hybrid fencing we came across this same problem time and again. The customer knows their fencing needs attention but cannot afford to replace it. They also know they are heading into trouble if they don't get it fixed, so end up having their fencing bodged to make it last a little longer, usually bits of wood and nails , which as professionals we do not like to do, so to overcome this we developed an innovative system to address these common problems which in turn enabled us to provide a new service to give an aesthetically pleasing, quick, cost effective and permanent repair that is guaranteed to last.

The Product

Slotted concrete posts when newly installed only grip the fence panel at the very ends and the slightest amount of ground movement will pull the post away from the panel and then the panel no longer fits in the post, starts to rattle, weakens it and is at risk of blowing out in strong winds.

Almost without exception, this will eventually happen to all concrete and wood fencing and it is because a slotted concrete post does not grip the sides of a wooden panel anywhere at all! Just at the edges and then only when new.

Fencesurgery concrete post inserts are a fence post insert collar incorporating adjustable side bars that compensate for variable panel widths and eliminate any panel rattling. Manufactured in 3mm thick injection moulded abs they are tough and virtually indestructible.

When the panel is out of the posts, the posts are drilled using a masonry bit, plugged and the insert collars screwed on, then when the panel is re installed (the panel width may have to be trimmed slightly using a skil saw) the side bars are bonded to the collar with a high performance double sided adhesive tape (provided) and fitted to suit the panel width. The panel is then  "gripped" on either side of the panel 30mm in from the ends yet still retains enough lateral movement to angle the panel up to 30 deg. If needed. Panel and post fit is then unaffected by any further ground movement or swelling and shrinking of the wood, thus effecting a permanent repair. They are barely noticed when installed and 2 per slot is usually adequate.

Another plus point to this system is a lot of fencing has 6ft (1828mm) spacing but a many modern replacement panels are 1800mm so need to be extended with strips of wood. Using fencesurgery insert collars renders this unnecessary.

Occasionally in extreme cases you will find a concrete post is leaning so far from vertical that it poses a problem in removing the panel and "squaring things up" so in the kit we include post repair plates in 3mm galvanized steel, 500mm x 100mm. All concrete posts have 4 steel rebar strengthening wires, one in each corner. To square up the post, use an angle grinder to cut up to halfway into the post at the base leaving 2 rebar wires intact, push up the post to vertical, then drill and plug the concrete and screw the plate to the post.
