BUSINESS:
This is a rare opportunity to acquire an established catering business that could be run from home on a part-time basis but which has significant expansion possibilities. The business is ready to run now, although the season proper starts in April.

Trading since July 2013, the business fulfils a growing demand for simple and low cost, but high quality, ‘festival style’ mobile catering for DIY weddings and other family parties/functions in the form of award winning pies with mash, gravy and minted peas served in eco-friendly recyclable/disposable boxes to be eaten using wooden/plant based disposable cutlery. A mouth-watering selection of pies are available including Steak and Ale, Steak and Devon Blue Cheese, Butternut Squash & Mixed Bean, Chicken & Wild Mushroom, Lamb, Chorizo and Chickpea and Ham Hock & Pea.

The food is served from a bespoke vehicle in the form of a specially converted van with back box fitted internally with a hot cupboard and chiller unit, having been pre-cooked at base and driven to the venue, which can often take the form of a barn or a field.

Based near Exeter and operating mainly across Devon, c 25% of bookings are secured following referral from the pie supplier, whose products are stocked by Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and other premier retailers. No formal advertising has been undertaken and the business would appear to be eminently scalable.

Bookings are already in place for 2018, 2019 and 2020 and the asking price includes a comprehensive inventory of kitchen equipment as well as the bespoke vehicle and website.

The inventory will include the following principal items:

• Daihatsu Hijet pickup (1999 plate) with converted Jiffy Truck back incorporating side serving hatch, fitted hot cupboard and chiller unit
• Gazebo for erection at the venue (if outdoors)
• Unox commercial oven (portable with stainless steel stand)
• Electric double oven and integral grill with 6 burner gas hob (the hob currently unused)
• 2 x microwave ovens
• 2 x upright refrigerators
• Chest freezer
• Pie warmer
• Hot cupboard (mobile – on wheels)
• Burco water boiler
• Stainless steel bain-maries and food trays
• Catering utensils and Tupperware containers

LOCATION:
The business currently operates from an adapted portakabin (with necessary local authority hygiene approvals in place) which is located in a secure compound on a busy light industrial estate on the outskirts of Exeter.

The compound is rented and shared by the vendor and other members of his family with other portakabins and storage units therein. The vendor intends to use the space for other purposes following sale of the business which therefore needs to be relocated.

Relocation of the portakabin is not a feasible or practical option but all portable kitchen equipment can be moved to a new site following the sale. Pending this being achieved, the vendor is content for the new owner to rent the portakabin on a temporary/strictly short term basis for £110 per month.

Sales of £22,142 were reported for the year ended 31 July 2016 which generated an excellent gross profit margin of 82.3%. Accounts for the year ended 31 July 2017 are in course of preparation and are expected to show a slightly higher figure based upon c 25 function bookings during the period.

At the time of preparing these details there were 21 forward bookings already in place for 2018 to 2020, a 10% deposit having been paid (NB All deposits for future bookings will be handed over to the purchaser at completion as is normal practice).

More detailed financial information will be made available to interested parties upon completion of a form of confidentiality agreement and following an exchange with Adams & Co regarding background, reason for interest, financial position and ability to proceed.

REASON FOR SALE:
The vendor works as a teacher on a fairly full-time basis in addition to running the business and also has a number of other business interests and ideas he wishes to pursue.

STAFF:
The vendor has been able to operate without any staff assistance and to serve up to 200 people within a half hour at the function venue. This can be increased to catering for up to 300 from the van with the assistance of one other person.

OPENING HOURS:
Bookings tend to be concentrated in the period March to October annually and on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and bank holiday Mondays for obvious reasons.

This means it is quite possible to operate on a part-time basis which is rarely seen in the catering sector.
