HNS Signs, young, creative highly experienced sign-makers are celebrating a successful eight years in business under fourth generation signwriter Michelle Henry and 2018 has continued in the same vein as 2017 with more new clients and another Gold award picked up at the recent FESPA awards.
The FESPA Awards, are a global print and signage industry accolade celebrating the very best talent and recognising excellence in both traditional sign, print and digital signage.

Michelle Henry, Managing Director at HNS Signs, says of the award win: “Working with Ted Baker was an award win in itself, but to enter the project we delivered against world-class signage experts and take gold for the second year running really is something else. We were very excited to put our creativity and craftsmanship to the test for Ted Baker to enhance their retail store experience. Accepting Gold in Berlin on behalf of the team really highlights our dedication to our trade and creating something different for our customers. Just a few years back we started in a small co-space in Birmingham servicing one client. Now we are landing big brand names and global awards such as this really are the icing on the cake.

The last year has been incredible for HNS Signs with the highlight being achieving the gold award at FESPA the global print and signage awards in May, for the second time in succession. This year’s award for Ted Baker interior design follows last year’s award for the Arcadian project. HNS also won an award for Innovation at the 2017 British Sign Awards.
“It is with a heavy heart that I am now looking for a new owner, but I have set my sights firmly on Australia, and although I’d like to think I’m pretty good at running a business and being hands-on, even I can’t manage such a progressive and fast-paced business from the other side of the world”.
The global award highlights the hard work the Birmingham-based signage team delivered in collaboration with the interior design team at Ted Baker and their unique approach to signage design. Initially contracted to deliver a hand-painted chalk board sign and pub-style design for the Ted Baker village in Bicester, HNS Signs’ energy, passion and skill soon won over the design team at Ted Baker who then commissioned the company to complete more signage work in the Bicester and Oxford Store.
Naturally HNS Signs has a strong reputation for craftsmanship, attention to detail and delivering above and beyond the brief. The new owner would ideally be a business who would like to extend their portfolio and offer the types of work HNS do or for a business that tends to contract signage elsewhere.

HNS Signs delivered a genuinely artistic mix of traditional sign writing with a modern approach to support the opening of Ted Baker ’s two new stores in Bicester and Oxford. The uniqueness of the project was born as a backup plan, after the original plan to use a vinyl stencil was found to be not suitable. HNS Signs had to use their signage savoir-faire and use a trace to achieve a worn chalkboard look instead, which produced an outstanding finish. Taking nearly five hours to mark each board by hand and a further seven to sign-write and finish, the displays were lovingly crafted with handwritten letters just 2mm high. This attention to detail instantly won the team three more sign orders as Ted Baker could see the professionalism and true skill needed to craft such works of art. The next signage project with Ted Baker saw the HNS team turn their attention to the central wall space and changing rooms in their Oxford store which needed a luxurious feel.
Truly loving what they do and seeing their day job as a piece of art, the HNS team wanted to exceed expectations on this project and really deliver an enhanced customer experience for Ted Baker, which they did in so many ways winning a long-term relationship with the contemporary designer and walking away with Gold at the FESPA awards.

Competitive Overview Managing Director Michelle Henry is a fourth generation signwriter. She has been practically trained from her childhood by her Grandparents. Post University Michelle Found herself travelling in Australia which resulted in her working at a sign shop and that is where she fell back in love with the trade.
