Why buy an antiques shop

When it comes to joining the antiques trade, it pays to buy an existing antiques shop rather than trying to set up from scratch. When you buy an antiques shop that is already trading, there are a few key benefits, namely...

  • Stock already on-site: in the antiques trade, you've got to search carefully for every piece you carry. It's not uncommon for an antiques dealer to spend hours in the car travelling across the country in search of the best antiques at the best prices, and it can take years to build up sufficient stock to fill a shop. When you buy an existing antiques shop, the seller has already done most of the hard work for you.
  • Get to know local dealers faster: In retail, efficiency is absolutely vital, particularly if you are staffing the shop yourself. The better you know the antiques dealers in your local area, the less time you will spend on the road searching for stock, and the more efficient your business will become. The seller will already have existing relationships with most of the antiques dealers in the area; ask them to introduce you to these dealers during the handover period.
  • Improve your ability to value antiques: whether it's a computer database or a simple paper notebook, every antiques shop should have records showing what they have sold recently, what the item was bought for and what it sold for. Some shops will keep a customer database showing who the item sold to as well. Information like this is vital; it tells you how to price individual antiques for your local market, and helps you to avoid buying stock that you can't make a decent return on.
