Having spent 22 years in the health sector, I wanted to try a new enterprise where I could be my own boss and control my destiny. Peter had retired and was getting very bored; Janet had a demanding job as a Training and Business Development Manager, which involved a fair amount of travelling and had switched to working part-time. Janet had been researching various franchises as she wanted a less demanding lifestyle, but also one where she could put her skills to good use and also provide husband Peter with a new challenge in life, not to mention a good income! 

A Nationwide Cleaners Franchise particularly appealed to us – we liked the fact that we could work from home, we also liked the fact that our cleaners would be self employed (anyone who has had dealings with employment law will know what a nightmare this can be!). We thought the franchise monthly fee was reasonable in comparison with some other franchises and we also liked the money back guarantee, which is very unusual – this was obviously a company confident of our success! 

We found Peter Munro to be very helpful and informative right from our first meeting, he is entirely honest and tells you how it actually is! We won't deny that starting up the business was hard graft (which is only to be expected), but we had our first client by the end of June 2016 and had 50 clients by the end of October. Janet is giving up her training job in March 2017 to spend time further developing the business, we still have many postcode areas that we haven't yet covered and recognise that there is still a great deal of untapped potential out there!. 

Peter has not only spent time on developing the cleaning side of the business, but has enjoyed developing the marketing side too. Peter introduced tracking to his leaflet distribution, which has proved very successful and led to a constant stream of enquiries. When Janet has more time available in March, Peter plans to further expand the marketing, which he recognises as having good potential too!

Alison started in Sheffield, Chesterfield and areas nearby several months ago. After a more traditional office job, she was looking for more of a work/life balance and control over her own time. Gary started his new business in Birmingham recently. He had been working in I.T. for many years across various far flung sites in different regions, but wanted to work from home to avoid the exhausting travelling. Now, he just operates locally and never has to drive in the rush hour. Obviously, the work has to be performed, but there is no sense in arranging a meeting for 9am or 5pm when he can drive on relatively empty roads at 11am or 2pm. He already has several dozen clients and he is poised for a big push in the autumn after the summer holidays. He said he is "very happy" with the progress. Motivation is the key now he is working for himself and he is proactive in managing his time, but he always has support and advice available from head office or other more experienced franchisees.

New franchisee progress update

Adrian, a taxi driver in Huntingdon, started in late January part-time around his existing career with the aim of switching full-time to his new business when it generates enough money. Due to his own effort, following the proven system and asking for advice if he is not sure what to do in any situation, he has achieved over 30 clients in 2 months. Northampton has been a great area and Kettering has been surprisingly productive.

Leads have come in from the beginning from our leaflet distribution service websites which have enabled him to hire some leaflet distributors to deliver his cleaning leaflets door to door for free alongside the client’s leaflets. Essentially, he is running 2 companies (with our training and full support.) These are a leaflet distribution service and a cleaning service. As it is early days, he has plenty of questions to make sure he is approaching it correctly.

It will be interesting to see where he is up to by Christmas, as he approaches the first anniversary of his new business, but I am sure he will be doing very well.

Congratulations to Marc in Cheshire with the growth of his business! He is steadily augmenting his client base which consists primarily of dual income couples and the elderly. The couples often have large numbers of hours due to a busy family in a large house creating a significant amount of mess that needs to be cleaned, whilst the elderly require home help as a necessity, as they struggle to carry hoovers upstairs, for example. Business is steady despite comical headlines of triple dip and quadruple dip downturns! He is available to help new franchisees and often meets potential franchisees in the North and Midlands, so they can be sure they are making the right decision before going ahead. When I left my city job I worked as a consultant, helping small companies to implement a growth strategy based on franchising. I spent 18 months in the franchising industry so had a decent understanding of what to consider when looking to invest in a franchise.

I wanted a recession proof, growth industry with repeat income and a company that had a good track record of at least 4 years profitable trading. I considered a few markets that appeared to fit the bill and determined that domestic cleaning was the market to be in. I then looked at all the different cleaning franchises available, I wanted something that could be run from home, did not require a huge initial outlay and could be quickly scaled.
