The Great Northern is prominently located on Derby Road, (the A608) in Langley Mill. The pub overlooks the Erewash Canal Langley Mill Basin, where the Erewash Canal joins the Cromford Canal. Langley Mill is a large village in the Amber Valley District of Derbyshire. The village, part of the Aldecar and Langley Mill parish, is on the border of Nottinghamshire and is conjoined to the settlements of Aldecar (to the north) and Heanor (to the southwest), with the neighbouring village of Langley in the Heanor and Loscoe parish. Across the River Erewash is the Nottinghamshire town of Eastwood. The Erewash was the Aldercar and Langley Mill boundary; this moved in 1992 to the A610, the Erewash Canal basin becoming part of Langley Mill. The is next to the busy A610 trunk road, providing easy access to Junction 26 of the M1 motorway, Nottingham and Ripley and the A38 with the Derbyshire Dales and Peak District just beyond. There are good rail links to the rest of the country with an hourly service to Nottingham and Leeds. The journey time to Nottingham is 23 minutes.
